I invite you to join me in creating a new scholarship at Sacramento State that empowers students to make a change...
The lack of representation in higher education by students of color studying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) has always troubled me. As I attended California State University, Sacramento as an undergraduate, I witnessed the benefits of a diverse demographic that enriched a welcoming environment, which is why I was unsettled when I later attended their graduate program and noticed an absence of diversity. At times, it was dispiriting to see that I was only one out of two students of color in my graduate program. As a first-generation college student, I had to navigate the unfamiliarity of higher education with no professors of color to help serve as role models, which consequently made me susceptible to stereotype threats and worsened my imposter syndrome. Thankfully, I found mentors who helped guide me and inspired me to passionately pursue science.
Now my goal is to create an inclusive and diverse environment in academic institutions. Your donation will financially support incoming first-generation graduate students whose future goals are to foster diversity within academic faculties of the STEM field. By supporting this scholarship fund at Sacramento State University, you will aid aspiring college professors of color in becoming role models and inspire change in the disparity of graduate students of color in the STEM field. I encourage you to donate and help bring this vision into a reality.
