October is National Audiology Awareness Month

In 2008, the American Academy of Audiology started Audiology Awareness Month—in October—as a means to bring awareness to hearing health as well as the importance of hearing protection. Sustaining this field is a nationwide priority, as well as in California, and Sacramento State is doing its part.

  • The California Academy of Audiology estimated that an additional 750 audiologists will be needed in California by 2030.
  • The existing audiology programs in San Diego (CSU San Diego and UC San Diego) and San Francisco (University of the Pacific) are graduating between 30-40 audiologists per year as of 2021, which is insufficient for the needs of the profession and for the population.
  • To meet this need, a law was passed allowing campuses within the CSU system to offer a stand-alone Au.D. program. Four campuses were approved to propose programs: CSU Los Angeles (beginning January 2019), CSU Northridge (beginning August 2019), CSU San Jose (beginning August 2020), and CSU Sacramento (beginning August 2020).
  • Because of the historic shortage of doctoral Audiology training programs, significant resources including research and clinical space and opportunities for collaborative and impactful community clinical and research practice are needed to attract and retain faculty experts in the field of Audiology to the Northern California region.

During Audiology Awareness Month, you can help by making a donation to our Au.D. Program at Sacramento State. Your support will benefit our current and future students and faculty through research opportunities, clinical space resources, and opportunities that help the program grow. In addition to funding to help our program as a whole, student scholarships are a major funding priority.

Our new program needs your support. Please consider helping us reach our goal.
