Disability Awareness Month
October marks Disability Awareness Month, a time to highlight the experiences, contributions, and rights of individuals with disabilities. This month-long celebration provides a crucial opportunity to recognize and celebrate the achievements of the disabled community while also addressing the unique challenges they face.
Sac State focuses on promoting inclusion and diversity, educating about disability issues, celebrating the contributions of individuals with disabilities, and creating more accessible and inclusive environments through the Disability Access Center (DAC).
Join us in advancing educational equity and fostering an inclusive campus environment for all students as we celebrate Disability Awareness Month this October.
Disability Access Center
DAC is a vital resource that serves any enrolled student with a disability, whether temporary or permanent. Our primary role is to provide in-class accommodations for students with disabilities. In addition to this crucial work, we also run the Disability Cultural Center (DCC), a vibrant part of our community that focuses on offering workshops and social opportunities to our students.
Our mission aligns perfectly with the goals of Disability Awareness Month, as we work to ensure equal educational opportunities by providing comprehensive access services and appropriate accommodations. We view disability as a positive identity and are committed to equipping our students with tools that foster independence, self-advocacy, and preparation for meaningful, productive lives.
College life can be especially challenging for students with disabilities. Managing medical appointments, dealing with insurance, and overcoming societal barriers can consume a significant amount of time, leaving little room for social interaction and personal growth. The DAC aims to address these challenges by providing a space where students can connect, learn, and thrive.
The Disability Access Center is raising funds to support the DCC so that we can continue offering valuable workshops, social groups, and resources to help students with disabilities build connections, develop skills, and enjoy a full college experience.
