Powering Future Engineers
Matthew Salveson was a proud professor of Sacramento State, where he taught civil engineering from 2008 to 2014 and continued teaching his favorite course, Senior Class Project, until 2023. Known for his engaging lectures and unorthodox projects, Matthew was celebrated as Teacher of the Year by the local ASCE chapter and is fondly remembered by his students for his mentorship and enthusiasm. His academic responsibilities included mentoring new civil engineering faculty through ASCE's ExCEED program and serving as the faculty advisor for the best concrete canoe team in the Mid-Pac. Former Mechanics of Materials students will remember his favorite song: "Beer, Bait, and Ammo"—extra points if you remember what it stands for! Although a triple alumnus of UC Davis, Matt ended his career as a Hornet — Stingers Up!
Outside of the classroom, Matthew's career as a civil engineer spanned over three decades, with the last five years spent as a Principal at Wood Rodgers. His expertise in bridge and transportation engineering included managing the design and construction of major transportation projects throughout California. As a leader in his field, he played a pivotal role in delivering a wide range of public works projects, earning recognition as both a top engineer and a trusted consultant in the industry. His legacy as a charismatic professor, accomplished engineer, and faithful colleague endures.
As we celebrate his impactful career, we have an opportunity to extend his influence on future generations of engineers by contributing to the Matthew Salveson Endowed Scholarship.
