Student Research in the Evolutionary Ecology of Fishes Laboratory
Student Research in the Evolutionary Ecology of Fishes Laboratory
We study how parents care for their kids—but we do it with fishes.
And yes, many fish are fantastic parents!
For over 25 years, the Evolutionary Ecology of Fishes Lab at Sac State has engaged more than 200 undergraduate and graduate students in hands-on research. Student research is a critical part of a university education—what’s known as a “high-impact practice.” It gives students the opportunity to experience what it’s truly like to be a scientist, an experience that can be life changing.
Through their research, students gain confidence, persistence, and a deep appreciation for the process of discovery. They learn to design experiments, navigate challenges, and share their findings with the broader scientific community.
The goal is to raise $6,000 to support these transformative learning experiences—ensuring that future student scientists (and their fishy research subjects) continue to flourish. Funds may be used for a wide range of research-related expenses — including, but not limited to, supplies, materials, equipment, fieldwork travel, and other essential costs that make scientific discovery possible
Your support helps launch successful careers. Graduates of the Evolutionary Ecology of Fishes Lab have gone on to become professors, medical doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and teachers, as well as dedicated professionals in federal and state Fish and Wildlife departments, water resource management, conservation organizations, and private environmental consulting firms. Their achievements reflect the transformative power of hands-on research and mentorship made possible through donor generosity.
Research takes resources. Your gift to this fund supports student and faculty research within the Evolutionary Ecology of Fishes Lab, ensuring innovative projects have the tools and materials needed to succeed. Even modest contributions make a meaningful difference — from covering everyday items like fishnets, buckets, and aquarium filters, to supporting travel for fieldwork and data collection. Every gift directly fuels hands-on learning, collaboration, and research excellence in the lab.
We seek your help in helping these students move towards their futures
