Description

Barrio Art Fundraiser

Art 148: Barrio Art in the Community carries forward the community-engaged teaching philosophy established by José Montoya and the Royal Chicano Air Force in the 1970s. Offered each fall and spring by the Art Department, the course prepares Sacramento State students to become educators who build meaningful relationships with K–12 students, families and teachers through art.

Through Barrio Art, pre-service teachers learn by engaging directly with local communities. Students lead art workshops, visit museums and galleries, create murals and facilitate both in-school and out-of-school activities. They also participate in Sacramento State’s Día de los Muertos event, where they guide art workshops for students from Sacramento City Unified School District.

However, the Art Department currently relies on non-guaranteed grant funding to support these experiences and purchase essential supplies. Your gift will help create more reliable funding for museum and gallery trips, silk-screening and stencil workshops, mural projects, art materials and other community-based learning opportunities.

Your generosity will help future educators develop the skills to teach through anti-racist, social justice, asset-based and equity-centered approaches. Just as importantly, it will help them build trust with students, families, teachers and administrators while learning how art can strengthen and advocate for communities.

With your gift to the Art Department, Barrio Art students can continue transforming classrooms and communities through creativity, connection and shared learning.
